Let’s start with a moment for Young Huh’s kitchen. She describes it to Radio Cherry Bombe host Kerry Diamond as “Italian glossy”—!!—a combination of glamorous finishes with a country-warm feeling. Instead of a kitchen island, she has an 11-foot walnut table that’s under the perpetual spotlight of generous skylights. Swoon over the whole Rhinebeck farmhouse in Architectural Digest.
Designing her own home was a long time coming. Young had to endure the agony of law school, bar exams, the whole deal, until realizing, a few months into her first law clerk job, that she yearned for a creative life. The dark, windowless rooms where she pored over old cases didn’t help. “A lot of us have trouble coming to self-understanding,” she tells Kerry.
The question at the heart of this episode: At what point do you really know yourself?
Along the way in her search for what came next, she met an interior designer at a party and had her lightbulb moment. She left her law career behind and never looked back. It turned out that Young had an eye, which she’d been honing since she was a child disappointed in the drab decor of her Barbie dream house. Today, she’s unafraid of color, pattern, and playfulness, and her secret sauce is shaping the mood of a room. See her beautiful work in her new book, A Mood, A Thought, A Feeling, which is as much an immersion into her design brain as it is a guide for envisioning your own space.
