Britton Smith was kicked out of the house for… having an orgy?!
Psh, it really wasn’t like that. But the stirrup in his Texas childhood home begins to tell the story of the incredibly talented musician, Broadway actor, and advocate who realized it was in his nature to be “sacredly defiant.” And what if that’s a wonderful, change-making thing?
Britton, like a lot of professional actors, started his career in New York in between serving and catering gigs—one of which was at Seersucker, a restaurant co-owned by Radio Cherry Bombe host Kerry Diamond. Kerry followed his career as it sailed up and up, from his breakthrough performance in the musical After Midnight, where he had his nightly “wig call” alongside Patti LaBelle, to co-founding the Broadway Advocacy Coalition—and winning a Tony for it!—and now, Return to Mama, his new album with Britton & the Sting.
Here’s the thing about seeing Britton perform. The energy builds as the music rollicks, Britton explodes onstage in song and dance, and the audience absolutely loses it. If you get the chance to see the band perform, don’t miss it. (There’s an upcoming free show in NYC on 3/27.)
The conversation today rocks and rolls from:
Using your powers to make change in the world
The psychic cab driver who changed his life (seriously!)
Paula Deen on a deserted island (yes)
“Stepmom milk” (Britton’s nickname for his French Vanilla coffee creamer)
The 1997 food film we all need to watch this week—Soul Food
Happy listening, indeed. Check out the episode, then make sure you stream Return to Mama.
